Abide In Me
John 15:1–8
This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John.
GOING DEEPER:
-
Pastor David explained that God is in the gardening business (John 15:1–8). He desires to see us grow and flourish. He didn’t redeem us just to pluck us out of this earth and take us to heaven one day. How does the image of God as the gardener of your life inform and lead you in this season?
-
Pastor David taught that the last of the seven “I am” statements in the Gospel of John is located in John 15:1–8. Jesus said He is the “True Vine.” The vine symbolized something at the very core of the Old Testament people of God. Jesus’ audience would have been familiar with the imagery. The Psalmist (Psalm 80:8–11) tells us that God planted and cared for His ancient people, but they failed and turned out to be a false vine. Jesus, however, is the True Vine, the hope for the people of Israel and our hope. How has being connected to the True Vine changed your life? How does knowing that Jesus is the True Vine give you courage to face the challenges in your life in the coming week?Pastor David also taught that not only is the Holy Spirit with you, but He is also dwelling within you (John 14:17, John 14:20, and John 14:23). In the original language of the New Testament, “home” in John 14:23 is the same word as “I go to prepare a place for you” in John 14:2. He is going to prepare a future home for us in heaven, but He is also preparing a present home for Himself “in us” by the Holy Spirit. For every Christian, you are not just going to be a resident of heaven one day in the future; heaven has already taken up residence in you as the Holy Spirit dwells within you (1 Corinthians 6:19). Even though our awareness and attention to Him may ebb and flow, His indwelling presence is constant. How can you more fully embrace and find comfort in the truth that there is never a moment in your life that is outside of His providential care and gaze (Isaiah 43:2)?
-
Pastor David pointed out that John 15:2 teaches us to beware of fruitless branches. This verse describes the person who verbally professes faith in Jesus without possessing faith in Him—the person who is in proximity to Jesus but has no real intimacy with Him. We aren’t aiming for perfection but for constant growth (bearing fruit). What spiritual practices help you cultivate real intimacy with Jesus, not just proximity to Him?
-
Pastor David reminded us that growth often comes through pain. Pruning is not about punishment but about God’s love for us. God prunes—stripping away our sinful habits and idolatries. But sometimes pruning looks like a season of difficulty, a loss you didn’t expect, or a stretching circumstance you didn’t choose (James 1:2–4). Every branch that bears fruit, He prunes to be more fruitful and faithful. How is God pruning you in this season of your life? What trial is God using to prune you, to make you more fruitful and faithful?
- The central command of this passage is in John 15:4–5: abide. To “abide” means to stay connected, to stay dependent, to stay close, and to set your home in Jesus. Jesus is the source; we are the branches. Pastor David emphasized that abiding is not vague or a mystical idea. We abide in Him by allowing His Word to define and anchor us. His Word is our spiritual oxygen. Abiding is a day-by-day, hour-by-hour, moment-by-moment dependency—not just a quick breath. What are you trying to do in your life apart from Him, in your own strength? How can you practice your spiritual breathing this week (abiding in Him)? How can you change your schedule to make more time to pray and to listen to God? How can you stop relying on your own strength and start practicing spiritual breathing—abiding—to face anxiety, insecurity, fear, and doubt?
