So What Is It That We Are Celebrating?
Psalm 136:1–3

This week, in honor of our 100 year anniversary, Dr. Gary Fenton shared a special message of celebration from Psalm 136. In this message, he described what it is that we are celebrating:

  • We are celebrating the goodness of God.
  • We are celebrating the faithfulness of God.
  • We are celebrating that God uses ordinary people to accomplish the extraordinary.

GOING DEEPER:

Psalm 136 is a song that may have been sung or repeated in cadence as worshippers left Jerusalem to return home following their pilgrimages. This Psalm was used to celebrate God’s goodness and faithfulness as they traveled. Dr. Fenton shared that the God revealed in the Bible was vastly different than the selfish and manipulative gods of the other nations of the world. List several concrete examples of ways you have experienced God’s goodness and faithfulness in your life.

• Dr. Fenton explained this biblical truth: God is good, and life is difficult. He cautioned us not to get these two backwards. What circumstances in your life tempt you to think that this life is good and God is difficult?

• In Psalm 136:1–3, the Psalmist celebrated the steadfast love of God—His covenant love. We can see the thread of God’s steadfast love through Old Testament characters such as Abraham, Moses, and David. The gospel writer John wrote that we participate in God’s covenant love when we accept Jesus’ sacrifice for us and become the children of God (John 1:12). When did the steadfast love of God capture your heart or become real to you?

• Dr. Fenton reminded us that God chooses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. God uses every person—our talents and efforts—to build His church. God works through ordinary acts our kindness to help us heal each other’s wounds. What do you enjoy most about being a part of the body of Christ through the Dawson Family of Faith? How can you share your talents and gifts to help others in our congregation walk more closely with Jesus?
