The Word Became Flesh

John 1:1–5

This week, Dr. David Eldridge began the new series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he expanded on two points:

  • Behold The Grandeur Of Jesus
  • Behold The Works Of Jesus

GOING DEEPER:

  • Pastor David shared the goal of John’s Gospel is that we know Jesus, believe in Him, and live in and for Him (John 20:31). If you want to know Jesus, if you want to see His heart, His power, His love, and His purpose—start here. If you know and are walking with Jesus, you can never outgrow this portrait, come back here. What are your favorite verses or stories from the Gospel of John? How do the opening lines (vv.1–5) humble you and lead you to your knees in awe and worship?
  • In John 1:1–2, the gospel writer takes us back to the beginning of time to help us see the grandeur of Jesus. There was never a time when Jesus did not exist. He always was, He always is, and He will always be. The Word was with God from eternity past; He is “beginningless.” How is this truth absolutely beyond our human analogies to describe it? How can you change your schedule this week to make more time for solitude, reflection, and prayers of thankfulness for Jesus, our Savior?
  • Pastor David explained this: nothing exists that Jesus’ hand did not touch in creation (John 1:3–5 and Colossians 1:16). Jesus wasn’t a distant spectator of creation; He is the source. How does this biblical truth give you strength as you plan for the week ahead?
  • Pastor David shared that only Jesus perfectly knows what needs to be done to bring you into a fully flourishing relationship with God. Jesus knows what His creation needs. He knows your deepest hurt, the greatest challenge you face, the sinful habit/pattern that plagues you, and your deepest darkness, yet only He can make you whole again. He alone can deal with your sin problem. Our salvation is never outsourced. Jesus provides both light and life. How might you be turning to the wrong places to get your needs met? If you don’t know Jesus, will you turn to Him this week in repentance and faith? If you do know Jesus, how can you release your needs to Him trusting that He can meet them?
