The Majesty of God
Psalm 8

 

This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series in the book of Psalms, teaching from Psalm 8.

GOING DEEPER: 

  • Pastor David explained that Psalm 8 gives us one of the clearest views of who God is and who we are in relationship to Him. While we try to make ourselves the center of everything, this Psalm teaches us that God is above us, and our identity can only be understood when it is seen in the light of His infinite greatness (Psalm 8:1). He is transcendent and majestic, and all creation bears witness to Him. While all creation bears the signature of its Artist, it is only a window through which we behold His glory. What circumstances in your life tempt you to reduce God to merely a loftier version of yourself, who exists primarily to solve your problems and affirm your priorities in life? Which spiritual disciplines help you practice worshiping the Creator, not the creation? How are sunsets, mountains, stars, and the sea signposts to our glorious God?
     
  • Pastor David pointed out that there is a wonderful surprise in Psalm 8. The majestic God makes Himself known to us (Psalm 8:2). He is infinitely exalted, yet wonderfully known even by a child (Psalm 8:2). Jesus quoted this verse during His triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:15–16). Jesus applied Psalm 8 to Himself. The praise of the children was not misplaced, as they were giving Jesus the praise that belonged to the Lord whose name is the most majestic in all the earth. What can you learn from childlike faith?
     
  • The Psalmist is overwhelmed by the greatness of God and the smallness of humanity (Psalm 8:4). He was astonished by how small he was, and yet the Creator of all paid attention to him. Pastor David emphasized that in the original language of the Old Testament, the word “mindful” means to remember, to take notice of, or to set one’s mind upon. The God who scattered the stars knows the number of hairs on your head. The God who governs the movements of the galaxies is not too busy to hear your prayers. He holds you, He is your refuge, He is your strength, He sees you, and He loves you. God knows your name! How can you change your schedule this week to make more time for reflection on and praise to our God who, in His majesty, is also mindful of you?
     
  • We can be overwhelmed by the vastness around us and by how small we are. Psalm 8 tells us that in the vastness of creation, we matter to Him. He has made Himself known supremely in His Son, our Savior, Jesus. The greatest miracle of Psalm 8 is that in Jesus, God has made us His very own. If you have not made a decision to follow Jesus, who can you talk to this week? If you do know Jesus, who can you share the good news of Jesus’ sacrifice and God’s great love with this week?
