The Danger Of Amnesia
Judges 6

This week, Dr. Robert Smith, Jr., Professor Emeritus of Christian Preaching, Beeson Divinity School, shared a special message from Judges 6

GOING DEEPER: 

  • Our guest preacher, Dr. Robert Smith, Jr., shared that in many ways this passage described “the best of times and the worst of times.” The people of Israel worshipped and served God all the days that Joshua was alive. But in the book of Judges, we see the people beginning to do what was right in their own sight instead of what God commanded. They did evil in the sight of the Lord. What circumstance in your life tempts you to forget God and His leading in your life?
     
  • Gideon was called by God to fight Israel’s enemy. God told Gideon He would be with him and had a purpose for him. But Gideon questioned why such bad things were happening to Israel and wanted to know where the miraculous signs were now (Judges 6:13). How have you learned that at times your affliction or difficulty is actually drawing you back to God? How has God sustained you during your trials?
     
  • Dr. Smith noted that worship begins with a noun instead of a verb. God wants us to serve Him because of who He is, not for what He does for us. God is good, and our worship should be centered on Him. How can you change your schedule this week to make more time for praise and worship to our good God?
     
  • Dr. Smith shared that there was One who was handed over for us. He who knew no sin was handed over to Pilate and to the chief priests and was crucified (Matthew 27:26, Acts 2:22–24). Three days later, He was raised from the dead. We can face whatever life holds because Jesus is alive and loves us. Is He the King of your life? Is He your all in all?
