Our Shelter From The Storm
Proverbs 30:1–6
This week, Dr. David Eldridge concluded the series in Proverbs. In these verses, he expanded on two points:
- Our Human Wisdom Doesn’t Begin To Compare To God’s Wisdom
- God’s Wisdom Is True And Trustworthy
GOING DEEPER:
- The writer of Psalm 30 doesn’t tell us about his wisdom but makes the point that he really doesn’t know that much at all. He is saying that he doesn’t have everything figured out. A wise person is able to say, “I don’t know.” This admission is a sign of humility. At times, we feel the pressure to become omni-competent in all things—politics, economic policy, international crisis, and our cultural issues and problems. Are you able to admit, “I just don’t know”? What circumstances in your life make you feel pressured to have everything figured out?
- Pastor David shared that our human wisdom doesn’t compare to God’s wisdom (vv. 1–4). Our wisdom is like a candle flame; God’s wisdom is like a blazing sun. The answer to the questions in these four verses is beautifully and personally answered in the person of Jesus, the Christ (John 3:13; Mark 4:39–41; John 1:3; 1 Corinthians 1:24). We know that God’s Son, Jesus, is the wisdom of God made flesh. How can you change your schedule this week to make more time to pray as you seek God’s wisdom in areas of your life that you can’t figure out?
- Pastor David also shared that God’s wisdom is true and trustworthy (vv. 5–6). If we are going to know God, His purposes and plans, we must go to the Word He has spoken. While the human authors matter, we trust God’s Word because it is the Word of the Lord first and foremost, not only Moses’ words, or Solomon’s words, or Paul’s words. How does God’s Word shape you and your life? How do you orient your life toward the authority of God’s Word?
- While you may have always heard “God won’t give you more than you can handle,” that is not what God’s word actually teaches (see 1 Corinthians 10:13). God’s word does teach us that God will allow us to face more than we can handle on our own, but He will never give you more than He can handle (2 Corinthians 1:8–9). Despite the lies this world whispers (and sometimes shouts), you are not on your own to figure it out, and you were not meant to handle it alone. He is our shield, and He does not fail. We have a Savior who speaks and the winds and waves obey. Are you trusting the Word that is truer than your feelings? Are you trying to add to the Word or simply standing under it? How are you trusting the Word and taking refuge in the One who holds all things together?
