A Wedding Miracle

John 2:1–11

This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John

GOING DEEPER:

  • Pastor David shared that the setting of this first miracle is significant. This first of seven signs in the Gospel of John is a clue to who Jesus is. The Old Testament writers often use marriage imagery to symbolically portray God’s relationship with His chosen people (Isaiah 54:5–6). So, it was rather fitting that Jesus would choose the backdrop of a wedding to reveal His glory, not a funeral, not a political rally, and not at a temple or synagogue. How is this first sign a clue to who Jesus is?
  • There is tension in this story. One tension is around the expectations of the host. The other is between Jesus and Mary. In this passage, we see the high cost of the discipleship of Mary. While Jesus was her little boy, He was first and foremost the Son of God, the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world. And, though Jesus was her son, she had to bow before Him as King. It is a good reminder for all of us that we must personally come to Jesus as Lord. There are no VIP passes into the kingdom, even for His earthly mother. In what areas of your life are you struggling to give Jesus Lordship?
  • Pastor David shared that Jesus didn’t come to upgrade the old; He came to bring something entirely new. The six water jars were a sign of the incompleteness of the Jewish system. Jesus came to transform rather than to bring more of the same. He saved the best for last (Isaiah 25:6). How are you allowing Jesus to continue His work of transformation in you as you walk with Him? What new work is He doing in your life?
  • The miracle of the wine points forward to Jesus’ blood poured out on the cross. Pastor David shared that there was plenty of wine for all in the story, and there still is. God pours out grace to all who seek, to all who thirst. The miracle reminds us that Jesus is among us, not providing wine but providing grace, glorious grace that never runs out. How can you change your schedule this week to create more time to give thanks to God for His marvelous grace? Who needs to hear the story of God’s grace through your words and actions in the week ahead?
