The Promise Through David
2 Samuel 7
This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the Advent series Promise Kept. The message focused on one point:
- God keeps every promise He makes, and the future He has prepared for those in Christ is infinitely greater than anything we could ever hope for or possibly imagine.
GOING DEEPER:
-
The Advent Candle of Hope reminds us that our hope is not placed in wishful thinking or in our feelings but in a Savior who has come and who will come again. How does the hurry and rush of this season keep you from focusing on Jesus or tempt you to hope in something other than our Savior?
-
Pastor David shared that even as Christians we can go through life with a “Don’t get your hopes up” perspective. We have been hurt and disappointed, people have been dishonest and not kept their promises, and relationships have fizzled and ended. However, our God is a promise-making God, and He has always kept and will always keep His promises. Pastor David expressed that this passage in 2 Samuel 7 is one of the most important chapters in the Bible. God promises that David’s house will never fade away. There were many twists and turns, but God’s word remained firm. What the Lord establishes cannot be undone by human sin, political upheaval, or the long winter of exile. As you look back on your life, how can you see how God has worked through the twists and turns that you have experienced?
-
In Luke 1:26–28 and 31–33, we see how God’s promise was kept (approximately 1000 years later). His promise never depended upon human faithfulness—not David’s and not Solomon's—but on the faithfulness of God. Pastor David shared that in the fullness of time, a Son of David stepped on to the stage—Jesus Christ, the true and eternal King. Promise made; promise kept. How has God kept the promises He made to you in Jesus? How can you change your schedule this week to make more time to praise God for the promises He has kept in your life?
- Pastor David emphasized this truth: "God keeps every promise He makes, and the future He has prepared for those in Christ is infinitely greater than anything we could ever hope for or possibly imagine." The promises of the Bible teach us that He is with us now, will strengthen us today, forgive us completely, provide for us richly, hold us eternally, raise us bodily, return for us personally, and bring us safely to Himself forever. How can you reflect on these promises this week: Matthew 28:20; Matthew 11:28; 2 Corinthians 12:9; 1 John 1:9; Hebrews 7:25; Romans 8:38–39; John 11:25; John 14:2; and Revelation 22:20? How are you embracing that every one of these promises are “Yes and Amen!” in Jesus? How can you intentionally embrace your hope in Jesus as you look to the week ahead?
