I Am The Resurrection and The Life
John 11:1–44

This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John.

GOING DEEPER:

  • Our days are often filled with delays in our commute in the morning/evening, delays in our flights for special trips, and delays in lines everywhere. Pastor David shared that the story in John 11:1–44 is a story of a delay that was sovereignly appointed. How do you deal with spiritual delays? What do you do when it feels like your prayers are met with silence from heaven?

  • Pastor David shared this biblical truth from John 11: Often, what feels like a delay is actually a divine design, and what looks like defeat will become the clearest display of the power and work of God in your life. Jesus waited four days to come to Bethany, and despite Martha and Mary’s misunderstanding of Lazarus’ death, Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection and the life,” right here and right now. Jesus still asks us the same question He asked Martha: “Do you believe that I am the resurrection and the life?” Do you believe that in Jesus, death is not the end of the story, but rather a doorway to an eternal home with Him forever? Do you take Jesus at His word? Do you trust Him in this very moment and in every moment?

  • Two of the most comforting and powerful words in the New Testament are found in John 11:35, inexhaustible words in which we keep discovering more meaning in. Pastor David shared that Jesus wept because He was not only the resurrection and the life, but He was also the Man of Sorrows, well acquainted with grief. He came face to face with this cruel enemy of death that has ravaged the world since the Fall. He knew full well, and He feels full well, how death steals, kills, and destroys those He loves, those He created, and those He came to seek and save. What encouragement do you receive when you fully embrace John 11:35? How does this verse help you understand Hebrews 4:15? What does it mean to you that Jesus enters the parts of your life that are so painful and sorrowful for you?

  • At Jesus’ voice, the grave gives way because Jesus is the resurrection and the life. The stone was not the end. Jesus is the Lord who enters our sorrow, confronts our greatest enemy, and calls the dead to life. When has sorrow, pain, or grief knocked down the door of your life? How have the words of Jesus in John 11 comforted you and given you the peace only He can give? How has Jesus changed everything for you?
