A King Unlike Any Other
John 12:12–26

This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he expanded on two points:

  • The Unlikely Humility Of King Jesus
  • The Unlikely Victory Of King Jesus

GOING DEEPER:

  • Pastor David shared that in Jesus’ day, parades were reserved for military kings to display their power and authority. John 12 (and Matthew 21Mark 11, and Luke 19) is a picture of the unlikely humility of King Jesus. In fulfillment of Zechariah 9, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the colt of a donkey, coming as the Prince of Peace. He is truly a king unlike any other. He turned the world upside down, not with arrogance and grandiosity, but with His humility, love, and sacrifice. What other biblical stories of Jesus’ humility do you remember? How did Jesus describe Himself in Matthew 11:28–30?

  • Pastor David also described the unlikely victory of King Jesus. The people shouted, “Hosanna,” but they wanted a king who would set them free from the bondage of the Roman Empire and set up His own throne in Jerusalem. But Jesus’ kingdom is not a political kingdom won by force and domination; Jesus’ kingdom spreads through His own sacrificial death. How and why was this parade actually a funeral march? How is the cross foreshadowed in this story (sword and crown)?

  • While this story from John 12 is an invitation for us to ponder the depths of the unlikely humility and victory of King Jesus, it is also an invitation to ponder what it looks like for this King to be the Lord of our lives today. What does it look like for this King Unlike Any Other to reign in your life? In what ways are you accepting the invitation to surrender all aspects of your life to Jesus (John 12:25)? In what ways are you still living your own way, loving your own whims, your own wishes, your own demands, and your own delights?

  • Pastor David shared that we must die to ourselves to find real life in Jesus. If you entrust your life to Jesus, you will gain abundant life now and eternal life forever. In His death, Jesus won the final victory. Have you accepted Jesus as your King Unlike Any Other? If not, who can you talk to this week about that decision? If you have accepted Jesus’ sacrifice for your sin and your King Unlike Any Other, how can you change your schedule this week to make more time for confession, repentance, and surrender to His will and His way?
