Living Between Absurdity and Reality
Genesis 22:1–14

This week, our guest speaker, Dr. Robert Smith Jr., shared a special message from Genesis about Abraham's obedience to God.

GOING DEEPER:

  • Dr. Smith explained that how a person thinks about God determines how a person thinks about everything else in life (love, money, power, sex). How have you found this true in your life?

  • One of the truths from this story of Abraham and Issac’s lives is this: If you trust God and keep waiting, He is always on time. Describe a time when God was “on time” for you even when you didn’t understand the circumstances in your life.

  • Dr. Smith described that we all have a Mount Moriah like Abraham. A place where faith and fear converge, where feasting and fasting meet, and where laughter and lamentation get together. Have you come to that place when you believe God’s promise is true even when you can’t see it or feel it? Describe this time in your life.

  • When we have a healthy, biblical view of God, we see absurdity (the call to Abraham in Genesis 22:1-14), but we worship Him in reality. The reality is that our God sent His only Son to die a cruel death for our sins. We move from absurdity to reality when we worship Him even when we don’t understand what He does. What helps you worship God even when you don’t understand the “why” behind your circumstances? How can you see God’s fingerprints on every page of your biography?
