He Who Has No Sin
John 7:53–8:11
This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he explanded on two points:
- Grace Is Receiving Freely What We Never Could Deserve
- Grace Empowers Us To Live A Life Of Holiness
GOING DEEPER:
-
Pastor David shared that the scene, while overflowing with disgrace, is outmatched by grace. Although our modern translations identify these verses as a later addition to the Gospel of John, we can approach it reverently and see how it illustrates other passages of Scripture beautifully and fits perfectly with everything else we know about Jesus (John 21:25). As you meditate on this passage, what do you realize about your own sin?
-
Notice what Jesus did not say. He does not deny the law or minimize the seriousness of the sin of adultery. Instead, Jesus brought the law to its proper destination; the human heart. Pastor David emphasized this biblical truth: Grace does not deny sin; grace refuses to let sin have the last word (John 8:11). Jesus did not say, “It doesn’t matter.” He did say, you are not condemned, you are not disposable, and you are not defined by this moment. While your sin is probably different than the sin of this woman, how have you experienced this biblical truth in your life? How are you being transformed by the truth in your daily walk with the Lord?
-
This woman brings nothing to offer. She earns nothing and explains nothing, and neither do we. Pastor David illustrated that this passage teaches us this unshakable truth: Grace is receiving freely what we could never deserve. What circumstances in your life helped you learn this truth? How can you change your schedule this week to create more time for adoration and praise to the Lord for His gift of grace?
- Pastor David shared that this passage also teaches us that grace empowers us to live a life of holiness. Grace is not permission to remain unchanged or wallow in our sin. Instead, grace propels us forward in obedience. We live holy lives because we have been forgiven by God (Titus 2:11–12). This story fully illustrates that Jesus is full of grace and full of truth. In what ways are you trying to live life on your own with your limited power, skills, and resources?
