Rest For The Hurting Heart
Psalm 5

This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series in the book of Psalms, teaching from Psalm 5. In these verses, he expanded on three point:

Take Comfort That God Hears Your Every Request
Take Comfort In God’s Holiness
Take Comfort In God’s Grace

GOING DEEPER:

Pastor David brought to our attention just how distracted we are in today’s busy world. We often delude ourselves into thinking we are exceptionally talented at multitasking—as if we can somehow simultaneously give our attention to the TV in the room, the phone in our hand, and the family member or friend sitting beside us. We just can’t do it! As human beings, one of the distinct qualities we do not share with our Creator is that we are very much limited in our ability to give 100% of our attention to multiple things. Our attention is finite, but God’s is not. What kind of peace or comfort do you experience when you stop to consider that God is never too distracted to hear your request?
Pastor David explained that he, like many of us, returns to the Psalms over and over again because of the realness and rawness found within them. The Psalms are full of unedited human emotion. Do you find strength in the boldness of David’s words in Psalm 5? Do you relate to his calling out to God to “consider my groaning” and “give attention to the sound of my cry?” (Psalm 5:1–2). This week, as you pray, take time to consider whether you are “dressing up” your language or editing your emotions as you talk to God. Ask the Spirit to help you pray honestly and boldly, not masking or pretending anything before Him.
Pastor David drew our attention to the strong language in Psalm 5:5–6, which can oftentimes make us feel uncomfortable. Rather than ignoring or glossing over these verses, take some time to reread them in light of this truth: God delights in goodness at His very core, and therefore the flip side of His goodness and moral perfection is a holy opposition to what is wrong. Just as a doctor discovering cancer and then ignoring it is gross negligence, so too is a God who sees sin and turns a blind eye. His opposition to sin flows from His perfect love.
Coming face to face with the reality of God’s holiness should naturally make us consider just how unworthy we are to stand in His presence. And yet, in Psalm 5:7, there is a beautiful display of the generous love of God when David proclaims, “But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house.” Such a bold statement from a sinner like David. And yet, it is true. God has made a way, through Christ, for us to stand in right relationship with Him and enter into His house forever. This week, take time to remember just who it is that is listening to your prayers. Remember that God is not reluctant, distant, or distracted. No, He is patiently and eagerly waiting for you, and He delights to hear your voice!
