Parenting With Purpose
Proverbs 22:6
This week, Executive Pastor Dr. Brad Gowing continued the series in Proverbs. In these verses, he expanded on two points:
- Training starts young, teaching our children to fear God and walk in His ways.
- The influence of early training is not a guarantee of a child’s future choices.
GOING DEEPER:
- While children do not arrive into the world with an instruction manual, God’s Word does provide us with guidance for raising children. Parents are called to embrace their central role to equip their children to live according to God’s principles. If you are a parent, how are you seeking to equip your children to live according to God’s principles? If you are not a parent, how are you modeling what living God’s principles looks like to the children and young people in your life?
- Our Executive Pastor, Brad Gowing, shared that Proverbs 22:1–16 teaches us the consequences of our actions, the consequences of our laziness, the dangers of immorality, the call to humility and fear of the Lord, and the call to parents to raise their children in God’s way. Left to ourselves, we and our children will not pursue God (Romans 3:10–11; Romans 3:23). What truths in these verses stand out in this season of your life or your child’s life?
- He also shared that training needs to start young. “Training” here means to give foundational direction for life and can be literally translated as "to "dedicate.” How are you practicing intentional parenting—that is, discipling and shaping your children’s character and guiding them toward a life of obedience to God’s ways and not their own ways? How are you being obedient to God’s Word and Spirit in your own life?
- Proverbs 22:6 is a call for us to be reminded of the importance of prayer and trust in our sovereign God. Our Father knows what we need, and He knows what our children need. Our call is to model faith and trust in God and to stay plugged into the wisdom of our Heavenly Father. How can you change your schedule this week to make more time for pray for your children or for the children and young people in your life?
