Sermon Title: Laodicea: The Lukewarm Church

Scripture:  Revelation 3:14–22

This week, Pastor David concluded the sermon series on the seven churches of Revelation, with a look at the church at Laodicea.

Going Deeper:

  • Pastor David shared that both “hotness” and “coldness” are good, but Jesus was condemning the staleness, stagnation, and complacency of the church at Laodicea. How does Jesus’ “tough love” to this church challenge your heart?
  • In Revelation 3:17, Jesus said that the church at Laodicea believed the lie that economic prosperity was an indication of their spiritual well-being when the opposite was actually true. They were looking for security and identity in the wrong place. What or who are you tempted to place your security and identity in instead of Jesus alone?
  • The Christians in Laodicea were trying to live out of their own strength instead of depending on Jesus in everything (parenting, marriage, career). They had "spiritual" Attention Deficit Disorder and were prone to wander and leave the One they loved. What area(s) of your life tend to distract you from depending fully on Jesus?
  • In the context of these verses, the image of Jesus “knocking” is an invitation to the church (and to the individual Christian) to repent and come back to an intimate relationship with Him. Is the “noise” in your life keeping you from hearing His knock? How do you need to change your schedule this week to make more time to listen, to repent, and to walk with Jesus in obedience?

May the LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.

~ Numbers 6:24–26
