Consider The Ant
Proverbs 6:6–11

This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series in Proverbs. In these verses, he expanded on four points:

  • The Sluggard Drifts Into Avoidance
  • The Sluggard Drifts Into Passivity
  • The Ant Inspires Self-Motivation
  • The Ant Invests Today For Tomorrow

GOING DEEPER:

  • Work is not a matter that we "silo" away from our faith. Work was always intended to be a meaningful, God-honoring activity. Jesus was a carpenter and was no stranger to calloused hands and muscles that ached. How are using your work to glorify God and serve others?
  • In contrast to the ant, the sluggard drifts into avoidance (verse 9) and passivity (verse 10). The sluggard drifts through life, avoiding responsibility, delaying decisions, and excusing inactivity. His passivity becomes his pattern, and his hesitation turns into a habit. He doesn’t finish well. When is your motto, “I’ll get to it when I get to it”? In what areas of your life are you not saying “no” but are saying “l’ll get to it a week from Thursday”?
  • The ant inspires self-motivation (verse 7) and invests today for tomorrow (verse 8). The ant knows what needs to be done and moves with steady, determined focus. The ant works hard today to prepare for tomorrow. While you may be an overachiever and not given to sluggishness, are there areas of your life where you are given to “selective sluggishness”? Are you wide-open in your professional life but sluggish in investing in your marriage, parenting, friendships, or service to others?
  • Pastor David shared that we can be busy and still be selectively sluggish. Your calendar can be full, and you can still be running on an empty soul. The wisdom of Proverbs and the words of Paul (Romans 12:9–13) both press us to remember: now is the time to gather, now is the time to invest, and now is the time to prepare. You must be intentional: Do not be slothful in zeal, but be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord (Romans 12:13). Now is the time to invest. Consider the following questions, and ask yourself what are the next intentional steps you need to take?
    • Do you desire to be more faithful, more generous, a more Christlike person?
    • Do you want to be more patient and loving?
    • Do you desire to be more rooted in God’s Word, more fervent in spirit, and more eager to serve the Lord?
