A Treasure Hunt

Matthew 6:19-24

This week, Pastor David continued the Sermon on the Mount series, sharing what Jesus said about money and possessions.

  • What is your most important earthly treasure? What “moths, rust and thieves” (vs. 19)do you have to protect it against? How do you protect it?
  • In verse 21, Pastor David shared that “Jesus connects our relationship to our treasure with who we are as a person.” Based on that description, is your treasure more earthly or eternal? Explain.
  • In verses 22-23, Jesus used the metaphor of light to talk about the relationship to possessions. Describe how generosity could be considered “healthy”while stinginess could be considered “unhealthy”? How does that go against our culture? Why do you think we fight it so much?
  • What does it mean, in verse 24, when Jesus says that “No one can serve two masters…”?How do you balance your need for money to live and provide for your family with the temptation to be “possessed by your possessions”? What insight does this passage give you in that area?

ADDITIONAL DISCOVERY:

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."  Matthew 6:19-24

"Oh! But he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster."  Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

"I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me." Exodus 20:2-3

Practical Steps to Eternal Investing

1. Realize All That You Have Is A Gift

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.  James 1:17

2. Realize All That You Own Is Temporary

3. Make Giving A Priority In Your Life
