Let Not Your Hearts Be Troubled
John 14:1–14
This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he expanded on two points:
- Trust In The Promise Of Jesus For What Lies Ahead
- Trust In The Person Of Jesus As The Only Way To The Father
GOING DEEPER:
-
The words of Jesus in this passage are both comforting and timely for the disciples and for us in the days in which we live. Pastor David shared that, in the midst of our troubled hearts, Jesus calls us to trust in His promise for what lies ahead. In the original language of the New Testament, the essence of Jesus’ invitation is: “continue to trust in Me.” All of our fears, uncertainties, and anxieties are invitations—divine appointments—to trust in the promises of God. What circumstances, people, or places in your life cause you to have a troubled heart? How can you adjust your schedule this week to make more time for reflecting on Jesus’ words, praying for your heart to be yielded to His will, and sitting in silence before His holiness, faithfulness, and sovereignty?
-
Jesus’ invitation is more than abstract trust; it carries a promise. He said He was leaving for their good—and for ours—because He was going ahead to prepare an eternal home for us. We do not know all that lies ahead in life or in death, but this we can be sure of: what is ahead is far better than we could ever imagine. Your heavenly home is not an afterthought to Jesus. What steps can you take to rest now in His preparation for your eternal home?
-
Pastor David shared that we can trust in the person of Jesus as the only way to the Father. Because Jesus took the way of the cross, He is the way to God. Because He did not contest the lies spoken about Him, we can trust that He is the truth. And because He was willing to die, He became the source of resurrection—the life for us. Even when you do not know exactly where you are headed, as long as you are trusting Jesus, you are headed in the right direction. How does Jesus breathe hope into the dry places of your life? How is He your way when you feel lost? How is He your truth when you feel confused? How is He your life when you feel empty?
- Pastor David also pointed out that there is a tension in this passage. The cultural winds of our day push against the truth found in John 14:6. However, this truth is not narrow-minded—it is life-changing and available to everyone. Anyone, anywhere, at any time who turns to Jesus will be received by the Father. It is a wide invitation. The way is narrow, but the door is open to all. Who do you need to talk to this week about the wide and faithful invitation of Jesus? What changes do you need to make in your schedule to spend more time praying for that person and asking for boldness when the opportunity to share the Gospel comes?
