The Spirit Of Truth
John 16:5–15
This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he expanded on three points:
- The Holy Spirit Convicts Us Of Sin
- The Holy Spirit Assures Us Of The Judgement Of The Enemy
- The Holy Spirit Guides Us All Into All Truth
GOING DEEPER:
-
Pastor David highlighted three roles of the Holy Spirit in our lives from John 16:5–15. The first one is to convict us of our sin (John 16:8–9). The presence of God indwells each believer through His Spirit. The Holy Spirit awakens each of us to the fact that we are sinners who fall short of God’s righteous standard and that we all stand before Him in judgment for our sin. This is a supernatural truth. Jesus came not to show us how to live rightly, but because we are not able to live rightly on our own. Our greatest problem—at the deepest level—is a sin problem. When is it easier to believe our greatest problem is political, economic, or educational instead of sin? How does the Holy Spirit convict you of your sin and show you your need for a Savior? While it isn’t your role to convict others of their sin, how are you praying for others to respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit that leads to salvation?
-
The second role of the Holy Spirit from this passage is to assure us of the judgment of the enemy (John 16:11). Pastor David explained that Jesus knew the enemy would be defeated on the cross. He also knew the devil was alive and very much lurking in this world. Spiritual warfare still rages, but the enemy fights from a losing position. No matter the news of trouble in places all over the world or the struggles you face in your family or workplace, the outcome is sure. We know where we are headed. How does the analogy of the cross and resurrection as D-Day and the second coming of Jesus as V-E Day give you courage? How does knowing the enemy is fighting from a losing position give you confidence in the struggles, problems, and fears in this season of your life?
-
Pastor David taught that the third role of the Holy Spirit in this passage is to guide all of us into all truth (John 16:12–15). Jesus was not able to tell the disciples everything He wanted to tell them, but He promised the Spirit of Truth would guide them—and us—into all truth. Jesus is saying that the authority of God’s Word rests on the Spirit’s inspiration. He commissioned the apostles and promised that the Spirit would guide them into all truth. This promise is fulfilled in the rest of the New Testament. Are you trusting that God’s Spirit is active as you study Scripture?
- Pastor David pointed out that pastor and theologian J. I. Packer described the ministry of the Holy Spirit like a spotlight operator in a theater. Like the spotlight operator, the Holy Spirit shines a light on Jesus so we can see His beauty, His truth, His holiness, His death, His resurrection, and His glory. The Holy Spirit is “shy” and always shines through the Word of God so that we can behold the Son of God in all His splendor. How is the Holy Spirit, through the Word of God, transforming you to be more like the Son of God, Jesus? How does this truth give you hope and peace as you face the week ahead?
