Jonah: The Pouting Prophet
Jonah 4

This week, Dr. David Eldridge concluded the Sermon Series entitled Jonah. In this passage, he describes:

  • Jonah's Frustration With God
  • God's Response To Jonah's Frustration

GOING DEEPER:

• In Jonah 4:1–3, Jonah is furious with God. The people of Ninevah repented, and God granted them His mercy and grace instead of destruction. Jonah was all about mercy and grace as long as it applied to himself but not to the people of Ninevah. Describe a time in your life when you “pouted” like Jonah and experienced anger toward God.

• God did not respond to Jonah’s anger by scolding him but by asking questions and providing a living parable. God got the last word in this parable by highlighting the compassion He felt for the people of Ninevah. He looked on them with eyes of grace and mercy. Is there a group of people that you feel do not deserve God’s grace? Are we, like Jonah, offended by the extent of God’s mission to save everyone?

• Jonah wanted to dam up the love of God, and at times, we have the same temptation. But God’s love knows no boundaries and refuses to be contained. In what ways are you tempted to believe that God’s grace and compassion are primarily for people who deserve it, or for those who appreciate it?

• God’s love flowed to Rahab, Ruth, and Naaman in the Old Testament and was clearly the center of Jesus’ ministry and mission. Jesus’ invitation to follow Him is universal, and His offer of salvation is free. When are you tempted to be selective/restrictive about who you love? How is that behavior more like being a disciple of Jonah than a disciple of Jesus? How can you change your schedule this week to make more time for silence and repentance and to pray earnestly for all people to hear the gospel and receive God’s grace and mercy?
