The Beginning of Wisdom
Proverbs 1:1–7
This week, Dr. David Eldridge, began a new series entitled Proverbs. In this passage, he describes:
- The Primary Author Of Proverbs: Solomon
- The Purpose Of Proverbs: Live Wisely
- The Availability Of Wisdom: For To Anyone Who Will Heed Its Call
- The Source Of Wisdom: The Fear Of The Lord
GOING DEEPER:
- The primary author of the book of Proverbs is King Solomon (1:1). In 1 Kings 4, we read that Solomon asked God for a discerning heart to govern His people and to be able to distinguish between right and wrong. God granted Solomon great wisdom. What comes to your mind when you think of Proverbs?
- The purpose of the book of Proverbs is to teach us to live wisely (1:2–6). Pastor David shared that wisdom isn’t just book knowledge. You can be intellectually brilliant and still very unwise. Wisdom is skillful insight and making right decisions in a right way. Who has been a good example of wisdom in your life? Describe.
- Pastor David shared that true wisdom is found first and foremost in having a relationship with the Lord (1:7). Wisdom is knowing what is right and how to live well in relationship to God and others. Wisdom is not found in ourselves, or in adequate observation of the world around you, or in your education. It is found in the one, true God, revealed to us in Scripture as the eternal self-existent creator and sustainer of all things. The God revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. How is wisdom tethered to the Word of God and the person and work of Jesus? How are you trusting God for wisdom in your life?
- Pastor David shared these words to describe the fear of the Lord in verse 7; The fear of the Lord is an openness to Him, an eagerness to please Him, and a humility to be instructed by Him. The fear of the Lord is an awe that humbles you before God and inspires you to follow Him. It is a holy awe. In our information-overloaded world, are you still starving for wisdom? Is the fear of the Lord leading you to your knees in awe and worship of God? How can you change your schedule this week to make more room for prayer, reflection, and study in order to lean in to pursuing godly wisdom?
