Jonah: The Praying Prophet
Jonah 2
This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the Sermon Series entitled Jonah.
GOING DEEPER:
• The story of Jonah and the great fish is one of the most familiar stories in the Bible. What are your first memories of hearing this story?
• Pastor David shared that many people have no category for the miraculous and by default say it can’t be true. But, as believers in and followers of Jesus, the heart of our faith is the miracle of His resurrection. Do you struggle with the miraculous events in the Bible? How does the fact that God can do anything He wants, anytime He wants, with anyone He wants, help you trust Him even with the miraculous parts of the Bible?
• God got Jonah’s attention, and Jonah prayed to Him from the belly of the great fish. Pastor David taught that Jonah 2 is lyrical poetry about how God loved Jonah enough to throw him into the depths of utter darkness to allow him to see the light. Describe a time in your life when God was present with you in what seemed like the bleakest of circumstances and gave you hope even in the darkness that surrounded you.
• Pastor David explained that all of us have had or will have a “great fish” in our lives. But even during that experience (or experiences), we have great news: God hears our cry, and He isn’t finished with us yet. How can you change your schedule this week to make more time for silence and prayer to reflect on God’s presence with you and His power to strengthen you as you face the challenges before you?
