The Bread Of Life
John 6:22–70

This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he expanded on one point:

  • The only way to truly be satisfied in this life and the next is to be filled with the bread of life.

GOING DEEPER:

  • Following the feeding the 5,000 (plus) and calming the sea, people found Jesus on the other side and were following Him because their bellies were filled with the loaves and fishes. Pastor David shared that they failed to understand that the miracle of the loaves and fishes wasn’t first and foremost a miracle to feed their physical hunger, but a platform for a lengthy sermon that makes one point: The only way to truly be satisfied in this life and the next is to be filled with the bread of life. Jesus is offering a greater provision for a greater need. In what circumstances in the past have you experienced Jesus’ provision?

  • Jesus wanted the crowd to know—and He wants us to know—that there is a hunger that will only be satisfied by something far deeper than anything that you can feast on in this world. By using metaphorical language, Jesus is speaking about the deeper appetites of the human soul: the desires, longings, cravings, and aches that drive us toward whatever we think will make us happy, secure, and finally, whole. What “food” have you feasted on at times in your life that never satisfied you but instead left you empty?

  • Jesus addresses “how” to be filled with this bread by using “belief” as the anchor for the metaphors in His words (John 6:29; John 6:35; and John 6:47). Eating can’t be done accidentally; eating takes commitment. The same is true of believing in Jesus. You either believe Him or you don’t; you either trust Him and give Him your life or you don’t. Have you received Jesus, the Bread of Life, as your Savior and Lord? If not, who can you talk to this week about accepting Jesus’ gift of life? If you are a believer and follower of Jesus, how do you need to change your schedule this week to make more time for prayer and reflection on the great gift of salvation in Jesus?

  • Pastor David shared that the bread Jesus gives us has been paid in full by the One who provides it. He offers Himself, the true Bread, the Living Bread, and invites us to come to Him, receive Him, and find what our hearts has been searching for. He offers abundant life right now and eternal life forever in Him. He is the only One who can quiet the growling of our souls. How are you bringing your own “cotton candy” to the meal Jesus has provided? What areas of your heart have you closed off to Him? This week, how can you “taste and see that the LORD is good”?
