SERMON SERIES: Galatians

SERMON TITLE: “The Fruit Of The Spirit”

Galatians 5:18-26

This week, Pastor David continued the "Galatians” sermon series.

  • Look at the list of the works of the flesh in verses 19–21. Pastor David said that this list can be broken into three categories: pleasure gone awry, religion gone awry, and relationships gone awry. Are any of the things on the list “defining practices” in your life? If so, confess and repent and be assured you have a loving Father who wants to forgive you.
  • The work of the Spirit in our lives is the work of transformation. Being transformed by the Spirit is not about us “trying harder” but about us “abiding deeper” (John 15:5). What are the spiritual disciplines that you practice that help you abide with Jesus?
  • In the life of the believer, it should not be uncommon to growit is natural. As Pastor David shared, “Abide deeply with Him and growth will be the natural product.” How might you be stunting your growth?

ADDITIONAL DISCOVERY:

But I say, walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident; sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies and things like these, I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

~ Galatians 5:18-21

The “vices” listed in verses 19-21 can be grouped into 3 categories:

1) Pleasure Gone Awry

2) Religion Gone Awry

3) Relationships Gone Awry

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

~ Galatians 5:22-26

And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

~ Galatians 5:24-25

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

~ John 15:15
