The Promise In Eden
Genesis 3:15

This week, Dr. David Eldridge began Promise Kept, a new series for Advent. The message focused on this point:

  • Even from the beginning, God has been a promise-keeping God, offering the ultimate hope in the face of our sin and suffering.

GOING DEEPER:

  • Pastor David shared that the Christmas story doesn’t begin in a manager with the birth of our Savior, but rather it begins in a garden with the promise of His Father. What insights do you have as you think of the nativity beginning in Genesis?

  • Pastor David explained how the harmony of God’s original design in creation was disrupted. God set a loving boundary in Genesis 2 that invited Adam and Eve to trust His wisdom and acknowledge Him as the rightful Lord of their lives. But the brightness of Eden gave way to a dark shadow that emerged; the innocence of Genesis 2 stands in stark contrast to the rebellion that emerges in Genesis 3. Sin separated us from God spiritually and cuts us off from others relationally. How have you experienced this biblical truth in your life and in the lives of others?

  • Even as the paradise of the garden was lost, God’s rescue was promised. Pastor David shared that immediately after the first sin (and the shame and alienation that resulted), there was an announcement of the Savior (Genesis 3:15 and Romans 16:20). How do you hear the whisper of the promise of the Gospel in Genesis 3:15? How does the Light of the World, Jesus, give you hope as you face the coming week? What practical steps can you take this week to more fully trust our promise-keeping God?

  • Pastor David shared that our hope in life and death rests in a God who always keeps His promises. While there is real evil in our world and a real enemy who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, the promise spoken in Eden has been fulfilled in Jesus. On the cross, the head of the serpent was crushed forever. While we can’t fix the darkness, hurt, and pain in our world and in our lives, our hope firmly rests in the One who has already won the victory for us. How can you give up trying harder or manipulating circumstances and make more time for reflection on and spend time praying to the One who is in control and who will keep His promises? Who can you share the good news of Jesus with this week?
