Sermon Title: Jesus: The Crucified Lord

Scripture: Mark 15:16–39

This week, Pastor David shared the importance of the cross and Jesus’ crucifixion.

  • The Mockery Of The Cross – verses 16–32
  • The Message Of The Cross – verses 33–39

Going Deeper:

1. We rarely recognize the value of the cross of Jesus. In what ways have you found this to be true in the time in which we live?

2. Pastor David shared that Jesus, even after he had been mocked, beaten, spit on, and tortured, refused to take the primitive narcotic offered to deaden his senses. What stands out the most to you about this scene(s)? Explain.

3. The crucifixion process was intended to humiliate the criminal and entertain the spectators. Humanity’s worst was taken out on God’s Son. How does that mirror the nature of sin that lives inside all of us?

4. What is your response to Christ taking your place on the cross? If you have never accepted His gift, what is stopping you from doing it today?

Christ you experienced all anguish that we might be receive all joy,

cast off that we might be brought in,

trodden down as an enemy that we might be welcomed as friends,

surrendered to hell’s worst that we might attain heaven’s best,

stripped that we might be clothed,

wounded that we might be healed,

athirst that we might drink,

tormented that we might be comforted,

made a shame that we might inherit glory,

entered darkness that we might have eternal light.

Wept that all tears might be wiped from our eyes,

Groaned that we might have endless song,

endured all pain that we might have unfading health,

bore a thorny crown that we might have a glory-diadem,

experienced reproach that we might receive welcome,

closed his eyes in death that we might gaze on unclouded brightness,

expired that we might forever live.
