Seek Christ
Colossians 3:1–17
This week, Rev. Bryan Howard, Dawson's Minister to Students, shared a message titled Seek Christ. In these verses, he expanded on three points:
- View This World Through The Hope Of Christ
- View Our Sin Through The Work Of Christ
- View Yourself As The Body Of Christ
GOING DEEPER:
-
Just as glasses/corrective lenses help make the world clearer for those who wear them, Paul gives three “lenses” that help followers of Jesus see more clearly. As you read Colossians 3:1–17, what do you notice about the passage?
-
Bryan shared that Colossians 3:1–4 is Paul’s first lens: view the world through the hope of Christ. He reminded us to set our minds on things above. Despite what is going on all around us, believers and followers of Christ should keep their focus on Jesus' finished work and our destination of Jesus. How can you set your mind on your eternal destination in Christ instead of the things our culture offers? How does your hope in Christ give you courage to face the week ahead?
-
Bryan shared that we also view our sin through the work of Christ (verses 5–11). The imagery of taking off old clothes and putting on new ones helps us remember that Jesus has defeated the power of sin and called us not to linger in our sin (putting our old clothes back on). How does your identity in Jesus fill you up more than any other identity you can get from our culture (racial, religious, cultural, or social)?
- The final lens from this passage is to view ourselves as part of the body of Christ (verses 12–17). As a Christian, you belong to Christ and should want to look like Him. The body of Christ has been chosen to be His image-bearers. When your family, friends, or co-workers look at you, do they see the “the better thing” that is, the image of Christ in you? Are you ruled by the peace of Christ? Are you thankful? Do you let God’s Word dwell in you? Do you worship God out of thankfulness not duty? Do you pick up your cross daily and follow Jesus?
