A Miracle At Bethesda
John 5:1–15
This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he expanded on one point:
- Jesus transforms what feels hopeless into wholeness—His word alone can do what human effort never could.
GOING DEEPER:
-
Jesus always found a way to the hurting, the helpless, and the hopeless. Pastor David shared that Jesus’ question to this man is also a lesson for us to ponder. Sometimes we can become comfortable with our ailments and hurts and not only carry them but also begin to feed them. Our healing will mean letting go of the bitterness and coldness we have held on to for a long time. In what areas of your life is Jesus asking you, “Do you want to be healed?”
-
Jesus spoke and immediately the man was healed and his life was transformed. John wants us to see that the power of Jesus knows no rival. In the original language of the New Testament, the word translated “walked” at the end of verse 9 can be translated “walk and live.” What may have seemed hopeless to the world, is never hopeless when you have Jesus. What feels hopeless in your life right now? How can you change your schedule this week to make more time for reflection and prayer?
-
Pastor David shared that we may have lost sight of the power of Jesus in our current day. We need to retire some phrases that we use to describe others because there are no hopeless situations for Christians. Do you believe in this biblical truth? How have you softened your expectations of Jesus’ redeeming power?
- After this joyous miracle, Jesus faced condemnation from the religious leaders of His day. While they thought they were protecting the one true faith (especially regarding the observance of the Sabbath), in actuality, they were missing the joy of God at work. Pastor David encouraged us to be Christians full of joy who never tire of celebrating God’s work in our lives and the lives of others. How do you need to change your critical perspective and see the miracles of those who are rising up, taking up their beds, and walking in our world even now?
