This Little Light Of Mine
John 4:27–42
This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he expanded on three points:
- A Confession Of Faith In Christ
- A Real Change In Life
- A Compelling Passion For The Lost
GOING DEEPER:
-
Pastor David shared that the woman from Samaria offers a portrait of a converted life, and a converted life leads to a confession of faith in Christ. Jesus sought this woman, found her, and met her deepest need. As a result of her encounter with Him, she could not keep quiet. Every follower of Jesus has this kind of moment in time. When Jesus captured your heart, who did you run and tell?
-
Pastor David pointed to what this woman said, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” (Which was more a declarative statement than question). When we meet Jesus, everything changes. We leave our water jars and our nets—the things that once defined our livelihood and our security—and follow Him (John 4:29; Mark 1:8). The old is gone and the new has come. What “water jars” and “nets” did you leave behind when you followed Jesus? How are you pursuing Jesus in this season of your life, and what kind of spiritual growth is the Holy Spirit producing in you?
-
For this woman, the day of her conversion to Jesus became her commission to tell others about Him. She is an example of the biblical truth that a heart captured by Jesus’ love leads to a compelling compassion for those who are lost. She didn’t need any special training; she simply went out and told what she had experienced with honest, real, clear words that were focused on what Jesus had done for her. How would you describe to another person what Jesus has done for you? What honest, real, clear words would you use?
- Pastor David shared this helpful quote by Madeleine L'Engle: “We draw people to Christ not by loudly discrediting what they believe, by telling them how wrong they are and how right we are, but by showing them a light that is so lovely that they want with all their hearts to know the source of it.” All of us are called to share the light of Jesus with others. How can you change your schedule this week to make more time to pray for opportunities to share the light of Jesus with others and for the courage to speak as the Lord provides opportunities?
