Born Again
John 3:1–15

This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he expanded on two points:

  • We all have a need in life that is deeper than what we can achieve in life.
  • Our greatest need is met by a supernatural work of God in our lives.

GOING DEEPER:

  • Pastor David shared that we all have a deeper need than what we seek to achieve in life. It is a need that financial security, the perfect job, the most fulfilling human relationship, or the success of children cannot meet. Our greatest need is to be made new—to be given a new life from above, a new life only God can bring about in you. How are you looking to Jesus to fulfill your greatest need?
  • Even with all his accomplishments, Jesus told Nicodemus that he needed to be born again. All of his achievements were not enough. His (and our) greatest need could only be met by a supernatural work of God. Being born again is God’s work of creating spiritual life in you—it is allowing Him to cleanse you from your sin—it is receiving grace and receiving life from Him. Have you been born again? Describe your experience.
  • Pastor David shared that a spiritual life is not something you can earn or obtain after a lifetime of trying. It is not us doing our part and God chipping in to do His part. When are you tempted to think you must earn your salvation? How can you relinquish your mindset of earning your way to eternal life?
  • In verses 14–15, John tells us that it is Jesus who secures our salvation. We put our confidence in Him alone. He delivers us from the penalty of our sin and provides us eternal life when we believe in Him. How can you change your schedule this week to make for time for prayer, reflection, and thanksgiving for the gift of your salvation? How can you be a herald of the good news, “look to Jesus” to your family, co-workers, and friends?
