Sermon Title: The Rejected King

Scripture: Mark 15:1-15

This week, Pastor David showed us three rejections of Jesus and how we might be tempted to reject Him in the same way.

  1. The Sanhedrin: A Rejection Born Out Of Self-Interest
  2. Pilate: A Rejection Born Out Of Expediency
  3. The Crowd: A Rejection Born Out Of Deceit

Going Deeper:

  1. Which of the three reasons for rejection of Jesus, self-interest, expediency, and/or deceit, are you most likely to be tempted by? Explain.
  2. There is so much information in our world today, and yet, we live in a land starved for wisdom and insight. Pastor David asked us to be careful about what we believe to be truth and to consider the agendas of what is informing us and ultimately forming us. How can you create/maintain healthy relationships with your sources of information?
  3. Pastor David said that following Jesus means the crucifixion of your convenience and comfort. What part(s) of your convenience and/or comfort do you need to surrender to Jesus this week?
  4. The story of Barabbas is our story as well: the guilty one goes free because the innocent one died in his place. How will you live differently this week because of the finished work of Jesus on the cross for you?

Additional Discovery:

He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth. ~ Isaiah 53:7

“I didn’t go to religion to make me happy…If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity.” ~ C.S. Lewis

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.  ~ Jude 24–25
