Thirst No More
John 4:1–26
This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he expanded on one point:
- Only Jesus, the Living Water, can quench our parched hearts and satisfy the longings of our souls.
GOING DEEPER:
-
Pastor David shared that these verses record the longest conversation Jesus had with anyone in any of the Gospels. While it is easy for us to miss in our cultural moment, this conversation was surprising and scandalous for many reasons. Jesus crossed significant cultural barriers by speaking to this woman. Israelites and Samaritans were oil and water; deep political, social, and religious animosity existed between the two groups. What do you notice about this conversation? How does this conversation speak to you as you read it now?
-
In many ways, the woman in John 4 is the polar opposite of Nicodemus in Chapter 3. Everyone, everywhere, carries the same desperate need that only Jesus can meet. All of us are thirsty. In what ways does Jesus satisfy the deepest longings of your heart?
-
We do not know all of the details of this woman’s life, but we do know that a woman in that culture could not instigate a divorce. Pastor David described her as vulnerable in a way that few of us can imagine. She had a checkered past and a broken heart, but His love always led Him to the margins. What circumstances in your life tempt you to depend upon your relationships, achievements, comfort, or financial security to fill your deepest need? How can you change your schedule this week to make more time for reflection on and praise for the Living Water that only Jesus can give you?
- In John 4:39, the gospel writer tells us that many of the Samaritans in her town believed because of the woman’s testimony. As a follower of Jesus, you have received this gift of Living Water. Now, you are called to tell others how to receive it. What neighbor, co-worker, family member, or friend can you share the Living Water with this week?
