Denied
John 18:12–27
This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John. In these verses, he expanded on two points:
- Compromise Often Compounds Over Time
- Compromise Often Arises From Pride
GOING DEEPER:
-
Just like we can stumble and fall physically, it can also happen on our spiritual journey. None of us are immune from tripping spiritually. While they are not identical descriptions of the life and ministry of Jesus, the denial of Peter is found in all four Gospels. Pastor David noted that this story should be a check engine light for our soul. This is not just Peter’s story; it is our story as well. As you read John 18:12–27 for the first time, what do you notice? When you read through the passage a second time, what insights/truths does the Holy Spirit highlight in your heart and mind?
-
Pastor David explained that in this passage we see that compromise often compounds over time. What began as an attempt to avoid one awkward conversation had become a complete denial of Peter's relationship with Jesus. Peter went from hiding his identity, to repeating a lie, to denying what another knew he had seen with his own eyes. Sin spreads its tentacles and can never be contained or controlled. Compromises rarely remain small. How have you found this to be true in your life? How might you be denying Jesus in certain areas of your life?
-
For followers of Jesus, compromise-management mode is a miserable place to live. Being caught in the spiraling effects of sin is always exhausting, chaotic, and costly. Compromise rarely announces where it tends to take us. Are you continuing a conversation that is becoming too personal? Are you harboring a resentment you continue to rehearse? Is there a truth you are trying to slightly reshape? Is there an appetite you indulge because you tell yourself you deserve it? Is there another sin that has become too comfortable to you? How can you change your schedule this week to make more space for silence, reflection, repentance, and confession?
- Pastor David emphasized that compromise often arises from pride. Peter did what we are all prone to do—he overestimated his courage and underestimated his weakness. We are all “…simultaneously saints and sinners…” (Martin Luther), and this truth should humble us. None of us are immune from the pull of sin and compromise, and therefore, we must run to Jesus for His provision. Though Peter denied Jesus, Jesus did not deny him. We must stay close to Jesus. How can you cultivate “God-confidence” instead of self-confidence this week (1 Corinthians 10:12, The Message)? How can you be more tender and compassionate to fellow Christians who are going through the fallout of the sin, hurt, and brokenness that resides in all of us? What spiritual discipline can you embrace and practice this week that will help you run back to the arms of Jesus?
