The Cleansing Of The Temple

John 2:13–25

This week, Dr. David Eldridge continued the series from the Gospel of John

GOING DEEPER:

  • While the New Testament teaches that Jesus was tender, approachable, gentle, and lowly of heart, we are confronted with a complementary side of Jesus’s ministry in this passage. Not a meek and mild Jesus, but Jesus full of righteousness who brandished a whip of simple cords and turned over tables in the temple court. What do you notice about the setting, the conflict, and the resolution in this passage?
  • Pastor David shared that in all four Gospels the message is clear: Jesus tears down every barrier that blocks true worship of God. In his Gospel account, John makes the theological point that Jesus is the true Temple, the meeting place between a holy God and sinful humanity. How does this theological truth help shape how you walk with Jesus this week?
  • Pastor David shared that Jesus was angry because the Jewish leaders had set up shop to make worship convenient and comfortable for themselves in the only place that Gentiles could come, pray, and worship without distractions (the Court of the Gentiles; Mark 11:17; Isaiah 56:7) How do we fall prey to the same mistake of the temple officials and unintentionally erect barriers or obstacles that keep people from knowing God and worshipping Him? What things in your life—how you behave and your actions or words—are barriers to people coming to know Jesus?
  • The call of this passage is clear: Jesus will not tolerate anything that keeps people from knowing and worshipping God. Pastor David shared that we must never tire of asking ourselves as a church: are we making the way clear for people to come to Jesus, and are we, without realizing it, putting up barriers in their paths? Are there “familiar walls” that provide safety and support that become a barrier to those outside our church? How can the language of the church be difficult to understand for those who didn’t grow up in church?
