You Are Invited
The Advent Arts Committee (AAC), is excited to extend an invitation to artists to be a part of a growing opportunity for artists in the greater Birmingham area called the Advent Arts Project. The Advent Arts Project started in 2017 and featured the visual and written artwork of several local Birmingham area artists.
What & Why
The Music & Worship Ministry of Dawson Family of Faith holds it essential to promote a lifestyle of worship through encouraging our congregation and the people of Birmingham to use skillful forms of art to encounter God as our Creator in worship. Exodus 35:10 beckons, “Come all of you who are gifted craftsmen” to adorn the tabernacle. The Advent season is a special time of year where Christians anticipate God’s greatest gift, Jesus.
2018 Theme: Community Reflections
We invite you to create a piece or series of up to four original works of art that reflect on the Advent themes of Hope, Joy, Peace ,and Love. These themes are to be experienced through the lens of your local community (home, work, school, neighborhood, city, etc.).
- Each piece should be accompanied by an artist-prepared statement as to help focus the viewer on the artist's intended theme and meaning.
- Artist statements should be concise and 2-3 sentences in length. These should be emailed to dmullis@dawsonchurch.org by the submission deadline (November 16, 2018).
- The AAC will serve as adjudicators of each art piece that is entered to ensure that the piece and the artist's statement reflect a Biblical understanding consistent with Dawson's values.
- The artwork created is yours. Should anyone express interest in purchasing your creative work, we ask that you provide a contact card with your information on it. Should you choose to donate the artwork, please be sure and note that as well.
- Your artwork should remain in the gallery until the closing on December 23, 2018. Artwork can be picked up by 12:00 p.m. that day or no later than January 3, 2019 by 4:00 p.m.
When & Where
This collection of artwork will be on display in gallery format in the Gathering Room of the North building at Dawson Family of Faith from December 2 through December 23. There will be an Opening Night Gala on Friday, December 7 at 7:00 p.m., where you are invited to give a brief explanation of your art to those in attendance. The gallery will be open weekdays during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and admission is free. Visitors are provided with a gallery guide to aid in self-guided reflection and to help prepare their hearts during the Advent season.
In addition to being displayed in the gallery, attendants will move art pieces pertaining to the Advent focus of the week to the church Foyer and Vestibule each Saturday so that our church members can encounter these pieces on their way in and out of Sunday worship. The AAC will also select a piece of art each week to be incorporated in our congregational worship.
Submission Deadline: November 16th by 2:00pm.
All works are to be delivered to the North Building Gathering Room (adjacent to the Chapel). Visual and written works (poetry, calligraphy, narratives) should be submitted ready for display.
Provided below are scriptures that you can use to draw inspiration as you create. Please do not feel the need to reflect directly on a verse, rather, use these as guides in your creative process.
