Sermon Title: What Is Truth?

ScriptureJohn 18:19–40

This week, Pastor David shared a message entitled “What Is Truth?” that looked at the motivations of those around Jesus in His last week of life. Specifically, we looked at:

1.   The Religious Leaders: A Motivation Born Out Of Self-Interest

2.   Pilate: A Motivation Born Out Of Convenience

3.   The Crowd: A Rejection Born Out Of Deceit

Going Deeper:

  • Pastor David provided insight on the many reasons that Jesus’ trial was a “mistrial” as defined by the Sanhedrin’s own rules. Jesus threatened the power of the religious leaders of the day. We mirror that attitude when we want to be in control of our own lives. Do you allow Jesus to be in full control or do you try to tell Him how to navigate your life? Explain.
  • Pilate turned Jesus over to be crucified out of convenience. Even as followers of Jesus, we still feel the pull of comfort and convenience. How do you stand up for what is right in a culture that often celebrates what God calls wrong?
  • Pastor David shared that “We are all Barabbas.” How are you encouraged by the truth that Jesus’ undeserved death gives you a path to your own undeserved freedom?
