EXODUS: Idolatry

Exodus 31:18–33:6

This week, Pastor David continued the sermon series from the book of Exodus with a look at idolatry. As we focused on the Israelites, we were reminded of:

  1. The Foolishness At The Heart Of Our Sin
  2. The Idolatry At The Heart Of Our Sin
  3. The Mediator At The Heart Of Our Salvation

GOING DEEPER:

  • Pastor David shared that Exodus 32:1–6 is similar to the original sin of Adam and Eve when they doubted the goodness of God and the word of God. How does this story of the Israelites surprise you? How is it a warning sign for us regarding the foolishness of our sin?
  • There is a senselessness to our sins. We lose sight of God’s abundant provision and grasp for the things of this world; it is never an equal trade. In what areas of your life are you trading God’s goodness/good plan for your own insufficient golden calf?
  • Pastor David reminded us that our hearts are prone to make idols. What do you discover about your idols when looking at "your daydreams, your nightmares, and your fingernails?" In what areas of your life are you worshipping the good gifts instead of the good Giver?
  • Just like the Israelites, every one of us deserves the wrath of God. Instead of giving us His wrath, He had compassion on us and gave us His Son as our mediator. Jesus took the wrath we deserved through His death on the cross. Do you know Jesus personally as the mediator of your sins?

Exodus 20:2

“In this narrative, we perceive the detestable impiety of the people, their worse than base ingratitude, and their monstrous madness, mixed with stupidity…Could they not see the pillar of fire and cloud? Was not God’s paternal care abundantly seen every day in the manna? Was he not near them in ways innumerable?               ~John Calvin

Romans 1:22–25

“An idol is anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God. Anything you seek to give you what only God can give.”                 ~ Tim Keller
