SERMON SERIES: Galatians

SERMON TITLE: “Losing My Religion”

Galatians 4:1-7

This week, Pastor David continued the sermon series, "Galatians" by discussing our adoption into God’s family.

  • Pastor David explained that “religion” can only take you to two places:
  1. despair: “I haven’t done enough” (which, of course it isn’t about what you do)
  2. pride: “Look at all I am doing”.

In which place do you tend to land?

How can you move to the place of “humble confidence” which is where the Gospel leads?

  • Pastor David said that the way out of enslavement to religion is through repentance. What do you need to repent of today?
  • What does it mean to you to know that God adopts everyone into His family with the honor and benefits of a "son”? Share those thoughts with God as you pray this week.

ADDITIONAL DISCOVERY:

I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything, but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world.

~ Galatians 4:1-3

Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods.

~ Galatians 4:8

God intended the law to reveal sin and to drive men to Christ; Satan uses it to reveal sin and to drive men to despair. God meant the law as an interim step to man's justification; Satan uses it as the final step to his condemnation.

~ John Stott

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

~ Galatians 4:4-7

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

 ~ Galatians 4:6
